ACNE: What is Acne?

Acne is a condition of plugged pores that consists of black heads, whiteheads, pimples or pustules.  Acne can occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms.

Acne is common in teenagers, but can occur in adults in their 20's, 30's and 40's.

Acne forms during puberty due to stimulation of oil glands as hormone levels rise.

The skin pores become blocked, allowing bacteria to grow and irritate the skin.  The result is the formation of a pimple.

Acne cannot be prevented, but it can be controlled.  Acne is not life threatening but can have an adverse affect on self esteem.  Acne can lead to permanent and serious scarring if left untreated.

Your dermatologist can outline a therapy that works best for your skin type and the severity of your condition.
