ACTINIC KERATOSIS: What is an actinic keratosis?

An actinic keratosis is also known as a solar keratosis.  It is a scaly or crusty bump that arises on the skin surface.  It's appearance may be light, dark, pink, red or the color of your skin.  They can itch or have a tender pricking sensation.  Often actinic keratoses are recognized by touch rather than sight.

Individuals with fair skin, blonde or red hair, blue, green or gray eyes are at the greatest risk.  The skin of fair people has the least amount of protective pigment and they are the most susceptible to sunburn.

Actinic keratosis increases with years and older individuals are more likely to develop this condition.  It appears primarily on sun exposed areas such as the face, ears, head, neck, lips, hands, and forearms.

Actinic keratosis is a precancerous skin condition and should be treated seriously.
