Allergic Contact Rashes (contact dermatitis): What is an Allergic Contact Rash?

A skin allergy can cause dermatitis.  Dermatitis creates redness, swelling and blistering on the skin when a person is exposed to a particular substance.  This condition can be caused by a wide variety of substances that come in contact with the skin, called allergens.  Some of the most common allergens are nickel, rubber, dyes, preservatives, fragrances, poison ivy, poison oak and related plants.

People with allergic contact dermatitis should avoid the allergen that causes the rash on their skin.

For an evaluation, contact your dermatologist.
