Herpes Simplex: What is Herpes Simplex?

Herpes simplex is a contagious virus that causes blisters and sores on the skin.  It is most commonly found around the mouth, on the buttocks or genitals.  There are two types of herpes simplex, type I and type II.

Type I

Also known as fever blisters or cold sores, this is the most common form of herpes simplex.  It is usually found on the face.  The number of lesions will vary as will the number of episodes a person can experience.  The first episode of type I herpes is usually the most severe.  Any number of factors, such as fever, sun exposure or menstruation can cause recurrence of this condition.

Type II

Type II herpes usually appears on the genitalia, buttocks or cervix and is usually contracted by sexual contact with an infected person.  The virus affects about 20% of all sexually active adults in the United States.  Symptoms include painful sores, fever, itching, rash and a burning sensation during urination. The initial infection is often followed by a recurrence.

Treatment of herpes simplex

Although there is no medicine or vaccine to cure herpes I and II there are now new oral antiviral medications available for those experiencing frequent episodes of this infection.  These medications have proven to reduce the number of episodes a person can experience.  Most important is the prevention of transmission of herpes to others.  This can be accomplished by avoidance of sexual relations during a time of active infection, as well as not sharing cups, towels or clothing.

See your dermatologist for treatment of herpes simplex I or II.
