HIVES (URTICARIA): What are hives?

Hives are pale red swellings of skin that occur in groups on any part of the skin.  Urticaria is the medial word for hives.  Each hive can last a few hours before fading without a trace.  Hives are usually itchy but may also burn or sting.

Hives are the result of a histamine release in the skin.  Allergic reactions, chemicals in foods or medications can cause histamine release.  Insect bites, stress, cold and sunlight may also bring on an attack of hives.

Some common foods that can trigger an onset of hives are nuts, chocolate, eggs, fish, fresh berries, tomatoes and milk.  Food additives and preservatives may also be responsible.  Prescriptions can also be the source of hives and these include antibiotics, pain medications, sedatives, tranquilizers and diuretics.

Hives are very common and usually go away within a few days to a few weeks.

The treatment for hives is to find the cause and eliminate it.  Antihistamines are often prescribed by your dermatologist to provide relief.
