ROSACEA: What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes redness and swelling on the face.  It is often referred to as "adult acne".  Rosacea may begin as a tendency to blush or flush easily.  It usually appears on the face and cheeks.  Rarely will it involve the ears, chest and back.  As the condition progresses, small blood vessels and tiny pimples appear around the reddened area.

When it first occurs, rosacea comes and goes on its own.    When the condition doesn't go away on its own and when other symptoms, such as pimples or enlarged blood vessels become visible, it is best to seek advise from a dermatologist.

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown.  Women between the ages of 30 and 50 are most likely to develop rosacea, especially if they are fair skinned.  Rosacea can, however, affect men and women of any age, even children.

The best prevention may be to avoid things that make the face red or flushed, such as hot drinks, caffeine and alcoholic beverages.   Practicing good sun protection, avoiding rubbing the irritated skin and exercising in a cool environment are also recommended.  It is also best to stay away from irritating cosmetics and facial products.

Treatment options are many and varied depending on the severity of the condition.
